In October 16, 1976, the tanker "Bohlen" was wrecked in the Mer d'Iroise, at about 35 miles of Brest, and lossed about 7 000 t of Boscan crude oil. The coast of Brittany was polluted by 3 000 t, and 4000 t were dispersed in the marine environment. In July 1977, 23 surface sediment samples were collected to look for the traces of oil spill in the sea bottom, 9 months after the shipwreck. Only one sediment was very iittle polluted by the Boscan crude oil. Elsewhere, two other kinds of oil pollution were observed in sorne sediment samples. Severa! quantitative and qualitative criteria were used to research sorne oil pollution in the marine sediments and to know the origin: hydrocarbon concentrations, ratios total organic extra ct 1 organic carbon,... |

The weathering of petroleum was monitored by high temperature high resolution gas-liquid chromatography in northern Brittany seashore sediments, either contaminated by the Amoco Cadiz oil or experimentally polluted. Most aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons were relatively rapidly degraded, but some compounds like isoprenoids (pristane and phytane), triterpanes and alkylated phenanthrenes and dibenzothiophenes appeared to be more recalcitrant. In high energy sites (Roscoff beach), cleaning of the sediments was achieved between 12 and 18 months, whereas the Abers muddy sediments contained after two years bacterially neosynthesised very long chain n-alkanes (>n-C50). Interaction between physical leaching and biodegradation was responsible for sediments... |

The evolution of the hydrocarbons in the marine sediments of the mediterranean coast was studied by two different but complementary methods. In the first part of this study we describe results obtained through a technique specially adapted to sediments. It leads to a relatively accurate and reproducible determination of the hydrocarbon concentrations in sediments collected at many sites of the mediterranean coast polluted or not by chronical petroleum inpout (Brusc lagoon, zones of Embiez, Fos, Carry-le-Rouet, and Etang de Berre). The hydrocarbon concentrations in the non-polluted sediments are always inferior to 300 mg/kg of dry sediment with important variations according to seasons (x 4 during winter). In the polluted sediments the hydrocarbon... |

The evaluation of the ecological and economical consequences of the hydrocarbon pollution of the Erika implies the setting up of monitorings, analysis and experiments in the short, medium and long term. Among the consequences to be evaluated, a great deal of attention has to be paid to the direct impact on the biology and production performances of the main shellfish species as about 30% of the national production (around 130,000 tons of oysters and 60,000 tons of mussels per year) is cultivated in the impacted area. The main difficulty in evaluating the effects of the contaminants on a distinct part of the ecosystem which is mostly dominated by a cultured population dwells in the different approaches to set up as well as the variability of the answers... |

The supply of hydrocarbons oxidizing marine bacteria to petroleum polluted sea water has not resulted in an increase in the hydrocarbons degradation potential of this water. All the allochtone species have disappeared from the dominant microflora seven days after the treatment while the autochtone bacteria show a capacity for adaptation to the petroleum products which needs about four days of petroleum-contact to appear. This confirms the advantage of a fast proliferation of these bacteria in oil slides which could be provoked by supply of immediately assimilable nitrogenous and phosphorised mineral compounds. The degradation potential of polluted water must be raised to its maximum as fast as possible after an oil spillage in order not to let the aromatic... |
